Is Your Work Killing You? Look Out For These 4 Signs Before It's Too Late!

Work can be a very stressful aspect of your life. In the job market, our worth is often measured by how hard, how often and how long we work. An employment gap in your resume can negatively suggest the type of worker that you are. Then, there’s money and the all too real necessity to provide for ourselves and others.

It’s scary to think that an activity we’ve devoted much of our time, attention and brain power to could be shaving years off our lives, or could take our lives in an instant.

Here are four signs that your job is slowly killing you.

1. You Dread Going To Work

If you feel trapped or overworked by your job, feelings of fear, disdain or resentment may have you dreading your next shift. A consistent feeling of dread can incite stress, unease and depression. Stress can bring you to tears, cause heart disease and other chronic illnesses. For many, intense work stress can lead to suicide.

2. Exhaustion

Exhaustion is not to be confused with fatigue. Most of us go into work tired from time to time. Exhaustion occurs when all your energy is nearly depleted and you could pass out at any time.

Job schedules, shift structures and workloads can cause people to experience sleeplessness, irritability, or anxiety. When we are exhausted, we not only perform below standards, we endanger our lives and the lives of others with our increased potential to make fatal errors.

3. You Can’t Rest

Even when you finally get that opportunity to get some sleep, your body might be so overworked that you find it difficult to do so. At this moment of desperation, many people turn to sleeping pills and other unnatural drugs that they can overdose on if they’re not careful. Unfortunately, the concept of “careful” tends to not register with people who are already sleep deprived.

4. You Can’t Enjoy Yourself

Tight schedules leave no room for enjoyment and self care. If you find yourself jumping from task to task with no break in between, how will you find time to eat healthy, exercise and repair your body?

Without a way to release your stress, you will develop tension in your muscles. Tension in your muscles puts stress on the other systems in your body and can lead to further health complications.

Solutions?

If you feel trapped, you already think the situation is hopeless, here are some steps you can take to change your life’s outcome for the better.

Switch Careers

– Not everyone can do this, but if you can, it is better to work doing something you love, even if it pays a bit less.

Take a Vacation

– Do you have some vacation days you’re sitting on but think the world will fall apart if you leave? Don’t convince yourself to neglect what your body needs to keep you functioning at your best.

Adjust Your Standard of Living

– If you find yourself overworking to maintain a certain lifestyle, reevaluate your values and live within your means. Your health will thank you.

Do Yoga (Stretches)

– You’d be surprised how relaxed and free you feel when you take the time to stretch out those tense muscles.
