The Silent Killer in Sweeteners
If you’re conscientious about protecting yourself from potential cancer-causing products, especially ones that you eat, then you probably already know that sugar is something to stay away from. Tumor cells use a more glucose then normal cells, and a recent study from UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center proved that depriving them of glucose could effectively kill cancer cells.
So if sugar is off limits to killing or preventing cancer, most people turn to an artificial sweetener to satisfy their sugar cravings. However, new findings have revealed that not only is this a bad idea too, but it actually may be worse then sugar for causing cancers.
Chemical Compounds
Artificial sweeteners are comprised of many different types of chemical compounds, including aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame potassium, neotame and sucralose. While sugar may not be great for cancer cells, at least you can rest easy knowing that it’s a natural substance. These artificial sweeteners are all comprised of compounds that introduce chemicals into your body, some of which may be dangerous.
Aspartame is probably the worst compound of the bunch, with Michael F. Jacobson, the Executive Director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, saying, “aspartame has been found to cause cancer-leukemia and lymphoma, and other tumors- in laboratory animals, and it shouldn’t be in our food system”. However, despite these warnings, big food labels like Coca-Cola continue to pump their drinks full of the substance, and people who suffer from diabetes continue to choose these ‘diet’ drinks in an effort to keep their blood sugar levels down.
Saccharin is another compound that should be avoided, although it’s less carcinogenic then aspartame. The same company that manufactures aspartame produces saccharin, and in the 1970’s, it was found to have a link to bladder cancers. In 2000 it was removed from the U.S. National Toxicology Program’s Report on Carcinogens, however, it is still probably a good idea to steer clear of it.
Brand Names that Kill
You’ve probably heard all of the different brand names of artificial sweeteners; NutraSweet, Equal, Sweet’N Low, Splenda. All of these brands are commonly carried anywhere that coffee is sold, including big coffee chain like McDonalds and Tim Hortons.
As far as artificial sweeteners go, Splenda is the undisputed master of the game, Splenda is the trademarked name for sucralose, and is the best selling brand of sweetener in the world. It rose in popularity in 2003 after being heralded as a great baking substitute for sugar, since the company claimed it was non-reactive to heat. However, this isn’t the truth.
The Truth about Splenda
A recent study revealed that sucralose releases a harmful chemical when its heated known as chloropropanol, which is a form of dioxin, an incredibly dangerous and toxic chemical. According to the University of Columbia School of Public Health, “95% of all cancer is due to diet and the accumulation of toxins”. That’s a hefty figure.
It seems clear that one of the most sure ways to eliminate or prevent cancer is by limiting the number of toxins in your body, especially chemicals that are made in a factory. While sugar may not be great for you, at least its natural, and at least you know exactly what you’re putting in your body. With these chemical sweeteners, you really can’t be sure.
